What are Discoveries Unlimited and the STEM Mentor program?
Discoveries Unlimited is an organization created to help girls discover and support their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) through mentoring. The STEM Mentor program consists of mentoring teams which are created between a student and a person who works in a STEM field. The Mentor will guide the student as she explores education and career paths of an area in STEM.
What is mentoring?
We define mentoring as “a developmental partnership through which one person shares knowledge, skills, information, and perspective to foster the personal and professional growth of someone else.” www.asha.org/students/gatheringplace/mentoring.htm
Who will be mentoring me?
That depends on you. If you are interested in the environment, you’ll be teamed with an Environmental Scientist. If you like space, you’ll be teamed with an Astronomer. If you like figuring out how things work, you’ll be teamed with an Engineer. Your Mentor will be someone knows about your area of interest and can help you see opportunities and possibilities you may never have considered before.
What will I do?
You will meet up with your Mentor at least once a month and do something fun! You might go to a DU event together or a robotics competition, or a planetarium show. Some of the DU events we have planned are a Lego robotics workshop, company tours of local manufacturers, and taking part in a simulated NASA mission. You will also be in contact on-line weekly as your Mentor will talk about issues in the industry, different career paths you could follow in the field, or maybe even help you through that math concept you might find challenging.
