Discoveries Unlimited is “Popping with Possibilities”

Discoveries Unlimited made its debut in Valparaiso’s annual Popcorn Fest parade on September 11, 2010. With the theme of “Popping with Possibilities”, over 40 Mentors and Mentees of the STEM Mentor program, parents, and Discoveries Unlimited Board Members marched in the parade to support the Popcorn Festival and promote awareness of mentoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Although a little damp from the weather, the participants walked proudly chanting cheers and carrying posters with messages promoting STEM and mentoring. Bright yellow t-shirts worn by the group were sponsored by McAfee Animal Hospital and Elegan Custom Wear. The Discoveries Unlimited banner was sponsored by Simko Signs.

Discoveries Unlimited is a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring middle school girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Its STEM Mentor program pairs Valparaiso middle schools girls with STEM industry professional in one-on-one mentor teams. The goal is to encourage and support our girls’ interests in STEM education and careers, fostering lifelong STEM learners. Additionally, by collaborating with the business community, Discoveries Unlimited provides insight to STEM career paths available in Northwest Indiana encouraging our girls to remain in the communities that educate them, build workforce capacity and support economic development.
